Welcome

Welcome to TheBridgeQuestion.org, a site full of resources to help you answer the bridge question in IStructE's Chartered Membership Examination.

The exam is an 7 hour marathon that will test your ability to devise two viable structural solutions, explain how they work, and then select the best option. Once a solution has been chosen, you must then produce calculations and drawings, and a method statement & programme for the bridge's construction. There are generally five questions: four buildings questions and a single Bridge Question.

This website is not affiliated with or endorsed by the IStructE, although its contributors are chartered members.

The website is divided into sections as follows:

Exam Technique

Tips for how to approach the questions and spend the limited time wisely.

Past papers can be downloaded from the IStructE's website.

Exam Folder

Here you will find a series of printable "cheat sheets" that can go in the folder of reference material you take to the exam. The cheat sheets generally follow the Eurocodes (+UK National Annex), so that they can also be used in engineering practice in the UK.

Cheat sheets aim to put all the information you need in one place to save you time, particularly in the design appraisal and calculation sections.

The cheat sheets are split into ten sections that reflect the suggested structure of your physical folder:

  1. Design Appraisal and Letter
  2. Loads
  3. Analysis
  4. Substructure Calcs
  5. Steel Superstructure Calcs
  6. Concrete Superstructure Calcs
  7. Drawings
  8. Method Statement and Programme
  9. Steel Reference Material
  10. Concrete Reference Material

Detailed Design

This section of the site contains information and cheat sheets in a similar format to the "Exam Folder" section, but covering topics that are either too detailed for the exam or out of its scope (but otherwise useful to a practicing bridge engineer).
